Week Two
This week we finalized our rules for the classroom (involving phones). Before making our rules we were given an article about the effects of having technology during school and the problems with multitasking. With that in mind we also had a Socratic seminar revolving around the question; "How can we use technology to help us learn, without distracting us from our goals?". After that whole discussion we were introduced to the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. We were told to read chapters of the book and make an inference, question and connection.
What stood out to me the most this week to me was the cellphone article. The reason why it stood out to me was because of a connection I thought of while reading it. Before coming to this school I attended quite a strict school and there they banned phones. It was required to give your phone to the office before school and it was given to you after school (it was a small school so it was manageable ). Just like the article said the class was very focus ,quiet and the students were more respectful to the teacher.
During the discussion I really was rooting for the author and his opinion on the phones. But when everyone started talking about their opinion and how it is a choice to use it for either the better or worst I started thinking maybe it isn't all about having a quiet classroom but a classroom where the teacher and students have the respect and trust in each other to handle the phone situation themselves.
The story makes you feel as if the native Americans are treated poorly and that they have no hope. But my dad works on a casino in a reservation and it is nothing like how the book talks about it. It is very lively. That is what confused me the most this week , perhaps their situation changed over time , but it still confuses me a bit.
