The Interview
The first time I thought of coming to the United States was in a dream I don’t remember much of how it was pictured in my head. At the time I had more of an impression of being there by myself not much of how it physically looked like. The reason why I wanted to come to the United States was to come and work here but more than anything just to make some “mula” and send it to my mother cause she was a very hard working person. I was planning on coming here for more than three years. It took me longer to plan the trip rather than actually cross the border. I was 20 years old when I finally came to the United States but I had to “jump” the border, which wasn’t so difficult. When I finally got here I had my mouth wide open to see the place, I thought to myself “San Diego is a nice place to live”
Q: Did you know English before coming to the United States?
In the school they teach you, but I was like “hey why English , i’m never going to use it”. So instead I studied english off of an encyclopedia my dad had , but it wasn’t for American English it was for for British English , so it didn’t help me that much. When I was saying “can” it was a type of dog but here it means I CAN do something. So instead of actually helping me it confused me a lot more.
My first few months were good because I had to wait for a job opening.I was planning on going with some of my friends who came with me but for some reason I wasn’t able to go with them. So I stayed with some guy who I met in Mexico City the place where I come from. He was here for three years he helped me with everything , his name was Javier. The people who brought me here took me all over San Diego. They were the people who opened up a whole new world for me I enjoyed it while it lasted, although I did miss my family. When I finally did get a job I had to catch up in the two months of rent I didn’t pay and I had to get a car.So the first few months were not too good nor too bad , it was an experience. Your mother was the one who hired me to Jack in The Box. That’s why I invite you to go to Jack in the Box , you will find the nicest things in there. She was the one who was taking care of me. She was the one who persuaded her mother to pick me up from Cajon all the way to San Diego to parties and to play the guitar.
